Yale School of Public Health (Blair, J.) 4.11.23, published “Tick-borne Powassan virus is being transmitted in concentrated clusters in New England, Yale study says.” The article details a study that contributes a better understanding of the particulars relating to Powassan virus transmission and may be of aid to public health efforts to curb infections.
Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases (Occi, J., et al.) 5.23, published “Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in Alectorobius kelleyi (Ixodida: Argasidae) from peri domestic bats in the northeastern United States.” The goal of the study was to evaluate the incidence of Rickettsia and Borrelia pathogens in the parasitizing synanthropic bat species in the highly urbanized northeastern region of the United States.
On 4.4.23, Lyme Disease Association, Inc. (LDA) President, Pat Smith, was interviewed on NJ radio station, 101.5 WKXW by Host, David Matthau, about the spread of multiple dangerous tick-borne diseases in the State. PLOS Global Public Health (Hart, C., et al.) 6.27.22, published “Community engaged tick surveillance and tickMAP as a public health tool to track the emergence of ticks and tick-borne diseases in New York.” The article details a program that was used to acquire ticks and related information throughout New York State.
eBioMedicine (Chung, M., et al.) 3.21.23 published “Systematic comparisons between Lyme disease and post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome in the U.S. with administrative claims data.” The data-driven study analyzed a nationwide administrative dataset consisting of over 98 billion billing and 1.4 billion prescription archives from the years 2008 – 2016 to uncover characteristics of Post Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) that may be of diagnostic or etiologic importance.
The Rhode Island Chapter of the Lyme Disease Association recently provided Lyme disease educational information to school nurses. On 3.21.23, the Rhode Island Certified School Nurse Teachers Association presented a conference in Warwick, RI entitled “What Rhode Island School Nurses Should Know about Vector-borne Diseases.” Speakers included Sandi Delak, MEd, BSN, RN, NCSN-E, FNASN and Thomas Mather, PhD, Professor of Entomology at URI and Director of the TickEncounter Resource Center.
International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Corak, N., et al.) 3.15.23, published “Pleomorphic Variants of Borreliella (syn. Borrelia) burgdorferi Express Evolutionary Distinct Transcriptomes.” The study examined the lifecycle of B. burgdorferi, and its development of numerous pleomorphic forms, to gain clarity regarding possible biological and medical importance.
Journal of Bacteriology (Castro-Padovani, T., et al.) 3.15.23 published “Gac Is a Transcriptional Repressor of the Lyme Disease Spirochete’s OspC Virulence-Associated Surface Protein.” The study investigated the processes by which the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, controls production of OspC.

Emerging Infectious Diseases (Liu, S., et al.) 5.23, published “Fatal Case of Heartland Virus Disease Acquired in the Mid-Atlantic Region, United States.” The article describes a reported fatal case of Heartland virus (HRTV) in the Maryland and Virginia region, states that are generally not recognized as having human HRTV disease cases.

Welcome to the Lyme Disease Association’s LDA Doctor Referral System ©. LDA made updates and enhancements to its prior system and has launched a new site to provide patients with information about doctors, other practitioners, testing labs, and pharmacies that are knowledgeable about chronic Lyme disease and often about many other tick-borne diseases (TBD). Many of the doctors listed are often referred to as Lyme Literate Physicians/Doctors (LLMD). Tens of thousands of patients have successfully used the prior LDA system to locate Lyme and TBD resources.

Because there is a negative political climate surrounding Lyme disease, many LLMDs do not want their names posted outright on the internet. LDA has tried to balance the doctors’ wishes with patients’ need to find a doctor. This new system is a result of that compromise and therefore:
Because of the limited number of physicians treating chronic Lyme disease nationwide, some states, and in some instances, entire regions, may not have any treating physicians who follow flexible treating approaches such as those in the International Lyme & Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Guidelines, Evidence Assessments and Guideline Recommendations in Lyme Disease: The Clinical Management of Known Tick Bites, Erythema Migrans Rashes and Persistent Disease. In the event that the LDA Doctor Referral System © contains no Lyme or TBD resource listings in a given area, the closest possible option(s) will populate based on the location entered and specaialty/ies selected. The LDA appreciates any changes in provider information that you may find and make us aware of so we can investigate.
