The Senate has just released the 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The Explanatory Statement includes, under Emerging & Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, $26M for Lyme, as well as much language on Lyme/VBD. It also incorporates activities in HR117-403 which includes Lyme language LDA provided to Congress.
Charles Hart, et al., published “Human attachment site preferences of ticks parasitizing in New York” in Nature on December 3, 2022. By coordinating tick submissions from the community regarding bite-site location prior to pathogen testing, the researchers were able to gather sufficient data to better understand life stage-specific body-segment preferences of primary human-biting tick species in the region.
Evan M. Bloch, et al., published “Comparing the Epidemiology and Health Burden of Lyme Disease and Babesiosis Hospitalizations in the United States” in the November 2022 issue of Open Forum Infectious Diseases which provides the results of a study that examined a nationally representative sample of patient hospitalizations.
ContagionLive published the article “Lyme Disease Vaccine Shows Antibodies 6 Months after Completion” by Senior Editor, John Parkinson, on December 1, 2022. The article provides details of the most recent investigational outcomes for Pfizer and Valneva’s Lyme disease vaccine candidate, VLA15.
An article titled “New Virus Discovered in Swiss Ticks” published in International Global Biodefense on December 7, 2022, provides information about Alongshan virus (ALSV), which was first discovered in China in 2017. For the first time, scientists at the University of Zurich have detected the novel virus in Swiss ticks.
A November 29, 2022, article by Joe Graedon for The People’s Pharmacy titled “Brain Changes from COVID Affect Memory!” provides an overview of the latest research showing changes to the brain after COVID infections generally described as cognitive dysfunction or “brain fog.” The author addresses several ways that COVID affects the brain, even in the mildest cases, and includes results from a number of recent studies designed to better understand what is actually going on in the brain to cause a wide range of cognitive difficulties.

In response to the Biden administration’s issuance of the Presidential Memorandum on Addressing the Long-Term Effects of COVID-19, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published “Health+ Long COVID Human-Centered Design Report” in October 2022 which expands on two prior publications released in August 2022– “Services and Supports for Longer-Term Impacts of COVID-19” and “National Research Action Plan on Long COVID.”
Olivia Goodreau, Founder of The LivLyme Foundation, launched a newly created app that tracks long-haul disease symptoms called the LonghaulTracker on November 17, 2022. The app is not the first for the eighteen-year-old and was created for the millions of individuals living with long-haul or chronic diseases and makes it possible for users to record and track their symptoms over time as well as to download a report for caregivers and medical providers.
Katherine Leavey, et al., published, “Lyme borreliosis in pregnancy and associations with parent and offspring health outcomes: An international cross-sectional survey” in Frontiers in Medicine on November 3, 2022. Data regarding the health outcomes of people infected with Lyme disease during pregnancy is limited, as is perinatal transmission to their fetus, and the long-term effects on their children…

Welcome to the Lyme Disease Association’s LDA Doctor Referral System ©. LDA made updates and enhancements to its prior system and has launched a new site to provide patients with information about doctors, other practitioners, testing labs, and pharmacies that are knowledgeable about chronic Lyme disease and often about many other tick-borne diseases (TBD). Many of the doctors listed are often referred to as Lyme Literate Physicians/Doctors (LLMD). Tens of thousands of patients have successfully used the prior LDA system to locate Lyme and TBD resources.

Because there is a negative political climate surrounding Lyme disease, many LLMDs do not want their names posted outright on the internet. LDA has tried to balance the doctors’ wishes with patients’ need to find a doctor. This new system is a result of that compromise and therefore:
Because of the limited number of physicians treating chronic Lyme disease nationwide, some states, and in some instances, entire regions, may not have any treating physicians who follow flexible treating approaches such as those in the International Lyme & Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Guidelines, Evidence Assessments and Guideline Recommendations in Lyme Disease: The Clinical Management of Known Tick Bites, Erythema Migrans Rashes and Persistent Disease. In the event that the LDA Doctor Referral System © contains no Lyme or TBD resource listings in a given area, the closest possible option(s) will populate based on the location entered and specaialty/ies selected. The LDA appreciates any changes in provider information that you may find and make us aware of so we can investigate.
