Lyme Assoc. Greater Kansas City Host Booth At Osteopathic Conference
The Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City (LAGKC), sponsored a tick-borne disease information booth at an osteopathic conference sponsored by the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. It was held in Kansas City, Missouri on December 9, 2010. Four LAGKC officers spoke with approximately 70 pediatricians and family practice doctors, mostly osteopaths and some MD’s, discussing Lyme disease and co-infections.
The educational booth displayed pictures of Lyme disease rashes and other rashes caused by some of the coinfections.
Many of the attending doctors were surprised to learn that Lyme disease has been reported in every state, and that Missouri was ranked eighth in the nation in reported cases in 1990. Many took the literature packets provided, which included the LDA Lyme {R} Primer and ABC’s of Lyme Disease brochures, the LAGKC Lyme Disease is on the Rise brochure, information about ILADS, and other literature. Doctors taking a quick quiz about tick-borne diseases were presented with free tick removers.
The LAGKC, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Missouri and an affiliate of the national Lyme Disease Association, provides a telephone hotline, monthly meetings and monthly newsletters. Its dedicated volunteer members support medical and science professionals in their mission to help people with tick-borne diseases. The LAGKC distributes literature at many heath fairs and medical conferences in Missouri and Kansas.
Members also participate in and promote Lyme Disease Awareness Month (May) programs and events. Lyme disease prevention information is shared with school nurses, youth clubs and community organizations.
The LAGKC provides information packets to doctors and patients, special school education packets and free tick removers to public schools in Missouri and Kansas. The national Lyme Disease Association appreciates the efforts of all of the volunteer members of the Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City, Inc. and thanks them for making Lyme disease awareness, education and prevention a priority.
