Lyme Disease Seminar & Health Fair

LDA Salutes Ridgefield Lyme Task Force for 10 Years of Service!  

About 200 people attended the Lyme Forum in Danbury CT, Tuesday – May 14th, to hear Dr. Ray Stricker, Jyotsna Shaw from IGeneX Labs, and LDA President Pat Smith speak about Lyme disease. Prior to the event, there was a health fair with many exhibitors. First Selectman Rudy Marconi from Ridgefield gave a plaque to Karen Gaudian and Jennifer Reid, Ridgefield Task Force co-chairs, honoring their ten years of service to Lyme. Then Dr. Steven Phillips of CT was honored for his work with Lyme patients. Moderator Sandy Berenbaum, LCSW, BCD, Ridgefield Advisor, introduced the speakers. Pat Smith discussed the work of the LDA and various research projects it has funded, the spread of Lyme disease, problems with the surveillance numbers, the controversy and advocacy to overcome the problems getting treated and diagnosed. Dr. Shaw discussed testing issues and new tests. Dr. Stricker talked about different animals that carried Lyme and different strains, and the problems with treating patients with Lyme and co-infections. A question and answer session followed. A number of Lyme leaders from NY, MA, CA, NJ were in the audience.
