POTS Association: SARS-CoV-2 Infection & COVID-19 Vaccination

JAMA (Rubin, R.) 1.25.23 published “Large Cohort POTSStudy Finds Possible Association Between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and COVID-19 Vaccination but Far Stronger Link With SARS-CoV-2 Infection.” The article provides an overview of a study that analyzed data from the electronic health records of nearly 285,000 individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles – a majority of which were an mRNA type.

The authors report that the odds of a POTS-related diagnosis after SARS-CoV-2 infection is more than five times greater than after COVID-19 vaccination. And although POTS is generally far more widespread among women, it was observed that the occurrence of POTS that is related to SARS-CoV2 infections is similar in women and men, although the reasons for this are unclear.

The study is considered to be of major importance although continued research is needed.
