Breaking News: Borrelia garinii, Agent of Lyme Disease, Confirmed in US

Natalie Rudenko, et al., published in Emerging Infectious Diseases Jan. 2023  “Confirmation of Borrelia garinii, United States.”  Currently, Borrelia burgdorferi ss, B. garinii, and B. afzelii –members of the  Borrelia burgdorferi sl complex– cause most Lyme disease throughout the world.

This study shows isolation of B. garinii in S. Carolina in rodent hosts and tick vectors. B. garinii had been previously identified in islands off of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Results of study show evidence that B. garinii has been present in rodents in SC but they are not closely related to the Canadian strain but to some Eurasian isolates.  The study recommends that doctors in this region exercise clinical vigilance for B. garinii in humans.
