Study Published on Role of Trauma in Lyme Disease Severity

chronic lyme disease

The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, May 2022, published Persistent Symptoms, Lyme Disease, and Prior Trauma, by Mustafiz et al.  The study examined 60 individuals with persistent symptoms after Lyme disease. Trauma history, mental and physical symptoms, and functional status were measured with validated methods. One prior study concluded that traumatic events before Lyme disease could play an important role in symptom severity. Results of the Mustafiz study suggest a history of trauma has a small to medium effect on symptom severity — indicating that it may contribute to some extent, but other causes/factors are much more important.
