Articles are written by experts, and then several other experts in that field will review the article and send back comments/concerns to authors. Articles are sometimes changed/clarified to address the issues that are raised in order to be published. Not all info in peer-reviewed journals is reviewed such as editorials, letters, book reviews.

McCullough, M.D., M.P.H., Vice Chief of Internal Medicine, Baylor University Medical Center, et al. published an article in the American Journal of Medicine, August 2020: “Pathophysiological Basis and Rationale for Early Outpatient Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Infection.” The authors have proposed an algorithm based on age and comorbidities that allows for a large proportion to be monitored and treated at home during self-isolation with the aim of reducing the risks of hospitalization and death.

A new study published in Infectious Disease Modelling examines the relationships between incidence, prevalence, and total infection burden for Lyme borreliosis (LB) using sentinel canine and human seroprevalence data.
The researchers developed two models to estimate LB cases. One analyzed seroprevalence of Borrelia infections in human samples, applying corrections for false negative and false positive results from published test sensitivity and specificity measures.

Richard Horwitz, MD, et al., have published a new case study and retrospective chart review of 40 patients on double dose dapsone combination therapy (DDD CT) in the journal Antibiotics.
The study found that of the 40 patients analyzed, an 8-week course of dapsone combined with doxycycline and rifampin effectively improved symptoms in 98% of patients, as well as led to long-term remission in 45% of the total patients studied, even though most of the individuals were ill for a decade or longer.

In a recent study conducted in central Pennsylvania, evidence of emerging pathogens, some also common to ticks, have been found in fleas. Various pathogens can be spread by ectoparasites among animal host populations in nature. Along with ticks, fleas are found to commonly infest small mammals. The role of pathogen transmission cycles for these vectors is unknown. Only the white footed mouse tested positive for the blood‐borne pathogens examined, with 47 (18.1%) positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum and ten (4.8%) positive for Babesia microti. Other pathogens included Bartonella vinsonii, B. microti, and a Rickettsia felis‐like bacterium.
