Lyme disease is a bacterial disease which in the US is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi or newly discovered Borrelia mayonii. The bacteria can attack all of the systems in the body and produce many different Lyme disease symptoms, which is why it has often been called the great imitator. Women with Lyme disease who are pregnant or are thinking of becoming pregnant need to receive appropriate care from a knowledgeable Lyme disease doctor.
