Lyme disease is a painful disease. First diagnosed in 1977, it has spread for several reasons — but mostly because more people are living in areas that contain habitats favorable to the ticks that transmit the disease organism and the animals that host them. Many areas in the Northeast are, to use the words of health officials, “hyper-endemic.” But Lyme disease is not uncommon in areas of the Mid-Atlantic or the Midwest, either. And its range is growing.
