Mount Sinai Received $6.2 Million Grant for Long Lyme Care

Mount Sinai website, 09.20.2023, published a press release “Mount Sinai Receives $6.2 Million Grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation for the Clinical Care of Long Lyme Disease.”

Mount Sinai’s Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance received the grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to expand the Cohen Center for Recovery From Complex Chronic Illnesses (CoRE). This expansion will include research and clinical care for long Lyme disease and other infection-associated complex chronic illnesses, in addition to long COVID.

The funding will support new research programs to understand the similarities and differences between these conditions and develop targeted therapies. The Cohen Center aims to serve around 500 new patients annually and will open within the coming year. It will be led by three directors: David Putrino, PhD; Joseph Herrera, DO; and Amy Proal, PhD. In the press release, David Putrino said “For decades, people with long Lyme disease have struggled to find centers that can provide knowledgeable and compassionate care for their serious and debilitating symptoms. We are proud that our Center will be one of the few places in the world that is embedded in a major clinical institution to provide this care—this is a patient population that has been without access to adequate care for too long.”
