Welcome to the Lyme Disease Association Website

Lyme Disease Funding | Treatment Guidelines | Symptoms

Lyme Disease Association was founded in 1991 with the mission to increase nationwide funding and awareness about Lyme and tick-borne diseases. On this site you will find information regarding Lyme disease symptoms, Lyme disease treatments and other Lyme resources and educational materials for patients, medical professionals, researchers, educators, and policy makers.

Our Lyme doctor referral database can help put you in touch with medical professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease in your area. You can find out how to help our efforts to enable legislation which promotes scientific research to study Lyme disease and to find a cure, and see what grants we have awarded to researchers to move the field forward. Over the years, our work has been instrumental in helping the fight against Lyme disease, and we could not do it without your generous support.

2016 Final Lyme Case Numbers: Wondering If Surveillance Can Get More Confusing?

LDALyme Literacy Blog: From the Desk of the LDA President
The Lyme Disease Association (LDA) reports that the total number of CDC reported 2016 Lyme cases are now available. Never saw them? Not surprising. In the past, the CDC consistently reported Lyme numbers on a weekly basis, as they do with the other reportable diseases, in its MMWR Report, which is published weekly. The last weekly case numbers reported, however, were reported one year ago for 2016.

Scientific Meeting of Lyme Experts on Testing

It is well known to the medical community that Lyme disease testing methods are highly inaccurate. Addressing the issue, Steven Schutzer, a physician-scientist at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School organized a meeting of scientists from Rutgers, Harvard, Yale, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, and other academic centers, industry and public health agencies at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Banbury Center, New York. This meeting resulted in an analysis published in Clinical Infectious Diseases which focuses on new scientific advances in testing.

LDA Negotiations Leads to HHS Tick-Borne Disease Working Group: Pat Smith Sworn In as Member The LDA led negotiations for Lyme bill language passage in the 21st Century Cures Act, which culminated in the formation of the Health & Human Services Tick-Borne Diseases Working Group (TBDWG).

LDA President Pat Smith was sworn in as a panel member in DC (photo, 5th from L) at the Dec.11, 12 meetings, where she voiced the necessity for a report to be given to the TBDWG by the other existent DC federal working group—one which has no public members, does not meet in public, and has no formal charter. The TBDWG agreed. Creation of TBDWG subcommittees was also discussed. Ms. Smith presented the need for the inclusion of a surveillance subcommittee, despite CDC’s statement that it is not responsible for surveillance. Ms. Smith indicated that increasingly restrictive surveillance definitions have led to patients not being able to get diagnosed or treated, especially in low incidence areas. The TBDWG then created such a subcommittee. Subcommittee Announcement / Smith Appointment

During public comment portion, several patients, including two young teens, spoke about their life with Lyme disease. LDA Board member Tim Lynagh spoke about surveillance issues including that CDC no longer is reporting out weekly Lyme case numbers in its MMWR. HHS

SchutzerIt is well known to the medical community that Lyme disease testing methods are highly inaccurate. The only FDA approved Lyme tests available are antibody-based tests, which are the current standard, but are known to produce both false positives, and the more devastating false negatives. For example, it can take weeks for antibody levels to reach a point where they are detectable, resulting in a negative lab result. Many antibodies are cross-reactive to other bacteria not associated with Lyme disease, clouding diagnosis. These tests were created decades ago, with old technology, and omit important information.
